1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
˝ tsp almond extract
3˝ cups flour
1 tsp salt
˝ tsp baking powder

Gradually add sugar to shortening, creaming well. Mix in whole eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Add flavorings then stir in flour with salt and baking powder. Chill dough for easier handling. Roll out and cut into desired shapes. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned at 375°. Cool, ice.

Add ˝ cup sugar to dough (and food color it if you want) if you do not plan to ice or decorate. Makes 5 dozen.

Frosting
1/3 cup shortening
1/8 tsp salt
2 cups powdered sugar
2 Tbsp milk

Cream shortening and the salt together, then add the sugar and mix. Stir in milk and beat til smooth. Tint if you want.

One of my favorite cookies. The almond extract makes the dough smell so great. I remember hours of cookie decorating at Christmas with bowls of various frosting colors and sugar sprinkles and shiny silver balls—something I still love to do!—Keith
